Wielie Wielie Walie

This is an old nursery rhyme from South Africa. Sung in Afrikaans, it's a fun little game, reminiscent of All Around the Mulberry Bush.

Afrikaans:
Wielie-wielie-walie,
die aap sit op die balie.
Tjoef-tjaf val hy af.
Wielie-wielie-walie.

Kyk hoe swaai hy draai hy
klim hy op dan val hy af.
Kyk hoe swaai hy draai hy
tjoef-tjaf val hy af.

Wielie-wielie-walie,
die aap sit op die balie.
Tjoef-tjaf daar val hy af.
Wielie-wielie-walie.

English:
Willy-Willy-Wally,
The monkey sits on the barrel.
Boom-bang, he fell down,
Willy-Willy-Wally.

Look how he turns in his swing
He climbs on, then he falls down.
Look how he turns in his swing
Boom-bang, he fell down.

Willy-Willy-Wally
The monkey sits on the barrel.
Boom-bang, he fell down.
Willy-Willy-Wally.

Activities:
With younger children, you can sing the words. For motions, try a circle game with falling down, like Ring Around the Rosey. Let them know that "aap" means "monkey", and you can do it again as monkeys.
Have fun with the "tjoef-tjaf" (pronounced "chyof chyaf"). That's the sound of the monkey falling down! You can repeat the words while clapping or tapping different parts of your body.
