When I Build My House

Original by Parachute Express. An excellent repeat-after-me and pretend-play song — especially with sticks.

When I build my house (echo)
I'll need some wood (echo)
And I'll saw the wood (echo)
When I build my house (echo)

Chorus:
— will
Saw the wood, saw the wood,
Saw the wood when I build my house
When I build my house there's so much to do!
It's nice that you come along and help me, too.

When I build my house (echo)
I'll need some nails (echo)
And I'll hammer the nails (echo)
When I build my house (echo)

Chorus:
— will
Hammer the nails, Hammer the nails,
Hammer the nails when I build my house
Saw the wood, saw the wood,
Saw the wood when I build my house
When I build my house there's so much to do!
It's nice that you come along and help me, too.

When I build my house (echo)
I'll need some bricks (echo)
And I'll lay the bricks (echo)
When I build my house (echo)

Chorus:
— will
Lay the bricks, Lay the bricks,
Lay the bricks when I build my house
Hammer the nails, Hammer the nails,
Hammer the nails when I build my house
Saw the wood, saw the wood,
Saw the wood when I build my house
When I build my house there's so much to do!
It's nice that you come along and help me, too.

When I build my house (echo)
I'll need some paint (echo)
And I'll paint the walls (echo)
When I build my house (echo)

Chorus:
— will
Paint the walls...
Lay the bricks...
Hammer the nails...
Saw the wood...
When I build my house there's so much to do!
It's nice that you come along and help me, too.

And when I'm done (echo)
I'll go inside (echo)
And I'll look around (echo)
And I'll look pride (echo)

Wow! We built a house! What did we do??

Chorus:
We
Painted the walls...
Laid the bricks...
Hammered the nails...
Sawed the wood...
When I built my house there was much to do!
It's nice that you came along to help me, too.

NOTES
- Substitution: What else do we need to build a house? What else can we build besides a house?
- Sticks: This song can be done with hands/arms alone, but I do it almost exclusively with sticks.
Sawing: "saw" one stick with the other
Hammering: "hammer" the end of one stick with the other
Bricks: Lay sticks down, one after the other
Paint: Pretend your sticks are paintbrushes or rollers
- Dyad: It's fun to do this in partners:
Sawing: Each partner lays one stick down. They then saw each other's sticks.
Hammering: Each partner stands one stick up as a nail. Hammer each other's nails.
Bricks: One partner lays sticks down. Second partner holds their sticks on top. First partner moves theirs to the top. Keep switching.
Paint: Facing each other, partners hold up their brushes together and paint as one.
