Minister's Cat, The

This is a fun way of developing vocabulary, particularly adjectives, and can be used either with a whole class or in small groups. It has many variations.
It was featured in the musical Scrooge, as it is historically an old Victorian parlor game.

Skip to 2:49 to see the game in action. They use "Variation 2" from below.

"The Minister's Cat is a ________ cat."

Variation 1: The first person starts off by saying 'The Minister's cat is'... and has to think of an adjective to describe the cat beginning with 'a', e.g. angry. The next person does the same but with the letter 'b' and so on around the group.

Variation 2 (the greatest challenge)The first person starts off by saying 'The Minister's cat is'... and has to think of an adjective to describe the cat beginning with 'a', e.g. angry. The next person does the same with a different 'a' word. Try to get around the entire circle, then switch to the next letter of the alphabet. If someone misses, the group starts on the next letter, moving on to 'b' adjectives.

Variation 3 (what I use in the preschools): The kids tap their legs and maintain rhythm as best they can. The word they choose to describe the cat does not have to be an adjective. After they say it, the whole group repeats. For the preschools, this game is about maintaining rhythm, practicing creative thinking, and listening.
